How to Create Custom Drivers in CodeIgniter
Sep 11, 2017 @ 15:36:54

On the TutsPlus.com site there's a new tutorial posted showing you how to create custom drivers in a CodeIgniter application. In this case the "drivers" are what lefts the application work with external technology or services.

The best way to understand the concept of drivers is to look at how caching is implemented in the core CodeIgniter framework. The main Cache class acts as a parent class and extends the CI_Driver_Library class. On the other hand, you'll end up finding child classes for APC, Memcached, Redis and the like, implemented as pluggable adapters. The child classes extend the CI_Driver class instead of the main driver class.

[...] Creating a custom driver in the CodeIgniter application is the aim of today's article. In the course of that, we'll go through a real-world example that creates a MediaRenderer driver used to render the media from different services like YouTube, Vimeo and similar. The different services will be implemented in the form of adapter classes.

He starts by listing the files that he'll be creating along the way and where they need to be located in the application structure. He then starts in on the configuration changes required and the contents of the files. He then walks through the code for each of them briefly explaining how they work. He starts with the drivers then moves to the adapters and, finally, how to put them together to make a functional renderer for either Vimeo our Youtube videos.

ZendCon 2012 Call for Creativity
Jul 03, 2012 @ 17:22:54

On Zend's DevZone site there's a new post about the Call for Creativity for this year's ZendCon PHP conference:

If you, or someone you know with connections to the developer community at large, have something to show, we would love to hear so we can showcase at this year’s ZendCon. We are looking for music, digital artwork or video media submissions (including fun videos) which will be played or displayed at various places around the conference, with attribution, of course. Physical media submissions are also welcome though we will be limiting that to local artists.

They include some of the guidelines for submitting your work (with an obvious preference on digital media) including the formatting and what sort of topics it should be relevant to. Prizes will be offered to the winners - a spotlight in a ZendCon newsletter and press releases as well as exposure via each category on Zend's social media properties.

If you'd like to send in your submission, you can use the form on this page and link to the media you've created.

Suggested steps for launching a new web project
Jan 20, 2009 @ 16:22:33

If you're looking to start up that next great PHP project and want a little guidance on how to get the ball rolling, you should check out these helpful hints from Michael Kimsal for launching a new web project.

My background is *not* marketing, specifically, although I’ve been involved in a number of web projects' launches or relaunches over the last 13 years. Having said that, I've found myself giving similar advice repeatedly, so I thought I'd recap some of that here.

A lot of the suggestions have to do with networking and social media - setting up a twitter account, adding a blog even if the site's not done, gathering emails of those interested - as well as the typical search for feedback and picking the time to launch (even if its not all ready).
