Community News: Dutch PHP Conference 2010 "Big Blind Bird" Ticket Sale
by Chris Cornutt January 20, 2010 @ 13:36:15
If you hadn't heard (and were up in the air on attending this year's event) the Dutch PHP Conference has put their tickets on sale as a part of a "big blind bird" discount, but it's only good before the schedule for this year is released.
In previous years, we always had 'early bird' discount on our DPC tickets. This year, we'll have early bird discounts as well, but we're adding an extra level of discount. Since the schedule isn't available yet (our Call for Papers is still running), we're launching the ticket sales with a 'blind bird discount'. For those of you that know that whatever the schedule is, DPC10 is going to be awesome anyway.
The passes are discounted for a limited time - you can get a full conference pass for 500 Euro (marked down 150 Euro) and a "Tutorial Only" ticket for 265 Euro (a discount of 85 Euro). Sound good? Head over and purchase your tickets

Raphael Stolt's Blog: Closing and reopening GitHub issues via PHPUnit tests
by Chris Cornutt January 20, 2010 @ 11:16:18
Raphael Stolt has an interesting idea about PHPUnit plugin (GitHub_TicketListener) that allows you to close (or reopen) Github issues via PHPUnit tests.
Since PHPUnit 3.4.0 a new extension point for interacting with issue tracking systems [...]. The extension point has been introduced by an abstract PHPUnit_Extensions_TicketListener class, which allows developer to add tailor-made ticket listeners supporting their favoured TTS.
The "@ticket" notation that PHPUnit allows as an annotation is the key to linking together your unit tests with the new listener. Two methods, getTicketInfo and updateTicket, are used to have the listener make a cURL connection over to Github and send the request to a REST-like service on the remote side.

Marco Tabini's Blog: The story behind TEKX's Charter Ticket program
by Chris Cornutt December 30, 2009 @ 11:51:09
If you haven't heard about the Charter Tickets available for this year's TekX conference you only have a little bit of time to pick one up yourself - until January 6th! If you want to find out a bit more about why these special tickets were offered, check out this new post to Marco Tabini's blog (of php|architect) with some of their thoughts.
It posĀsiĀble to purĀchase a full - exĀpeĀriĀence TEKĀ·X tickĀet'"valid for both the main conĀferĀence and tuĀtoĀriĀal day - for $650. The catch (if you want to call it that) is that the speĀcial is only valid until we anĀnounce the schedĀule. [...] The reaĀsonĀing beĀhing the CharĀter ProĀgram is very simĀple: we recĀogĀnize that there is a core of atĀtenĀdees for whom our conĀferĀences have beĀcome an opĀporĀtuĀniĀty to meet up with their peers and learn what's hapĀpenĀing in the PHP world.
This Charter Program was created just for those people, the ones that are there regardless of what the conference itself has to offer but are confident that they'll be in for a good even no matter what. For them it's not just about the sessions, it's about the people they'll meet and friends they'll see again.

Chris Hartjes' Blog: So You Want To Telecommute? Part 2 '" Accountability
by Chris Cornutt August 03, 2009 @ 10:22:21
In part two of his look at telecommuting (here's part one) Chris Hartjes talks about accountability and how you can show your managers your progress in your development.
Telecommuting is not for misanthropes who dream of long stretches of uninterrupted work. You *will* be asked to prove that you're working, not sitting on the couch playing video games when you're supposed to be debugging that new Ajax-powered user interface. Just pushing your code into production isn't enough.
He recommends a ticketing system the managers could check in on whenever they'd want an update (as well as keeping it open to the customers so they can see the progress of their projects too).

Community News: Symfony Project's "One Day One Ticket" Contest
by Chris Cornutt July 01, 2009 @ 21:21:46
As is mentioned on the ServerGrove blog (here) the Symfony project is holding a contest to get help from the community and offer monthly prizes.
Pascal Borreli came up with a great idea to involve the symfony developer community and advance the development of the framework. The event is called one-day-one-ticket and it will give monthly prizes to the developer that fixes the most bugs in symfony. While it is still a good idea to contribute to the community anyway and get your merit badges, a little extra incentive always helps.
This post on the Symfony blog gets more into the details of the contest. To enter you have to sign up and close one ticket a day for the month. You'll then be entered to win one of that month's prizes including copies of books, a "surprise gift" or a contribution from ServerGrove.
