Cal Evans:
What do developers look for when they scan a job ad?
Apr 28, 2016 @ 14:20:15

Recently Cal Evans took an informal survey of fellow Twitter users and asked them what they thought was most important to see in a job ad for a developer position. In this new post he shares some of the results and responses to the question (with a surprising range of answers).

In my book “Culture of Respect” I have a section on writing job ads that will attract developers. I am in the process of revising that chapter, so I thought I would ask the people who actually read the job ads what they look for. The results weren’t that surprising to me. Having read a lot of job ads though, I am guessing that the results will be surprising to some managers out there.

He's embedded the tweets themselves in the post (straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak). Responses touch on subjects like:

  • salary requirements
  • clear definition of duties
  • less "buzz words"
  • well-defined list of technologies they'll be working with

The results are interesting and a definite must read for anyone coming up with job postings for open developer roles in your company.

Reddit.com:
Where do people put good PHP job ads now?
Jun 14, 2013 @ 16:08:46

On Reddit.com there's a post sharing some opinions on where to look for PHP jobs and find "the good ones" out of the sea of positions.

I don't want to make this a "hire me" post, because that would and should get downvoted, but where would a person go to find interesting PHP related job ads in 2013? Some of the older big job sites like Monster and Dice are a barren wasteland of boring recruiters hiring for defense contractors, health insurance companies and low end agencies. Github has a small but decent section. Stack Overflow has some decent ones. Hacker news has a monthly thread, but a strong anti-PHP hipster bias. Reddit, at least from search has so few that I find 2 year old ones.

The responses range from links to specific companies looking for people out to some more general resources like LinkedIn, Craigslist, and yes, even recruiters (just be sure to pick a good one).

PHPBuilder.com:
Using cURL with PHP
Feb 03, 2007 @ 00:41:00

On PHPBuilder.com today, there's a new tutorial spotlighting the use of the cURL library with PHP:

cURL is one of the most powerful PHP extensions. It stands for Client URL, and allows you to communicate with other servers using a wide range of protocols. Perhaps that sounds fairly uninteresting, but give it some more thought.

As food for thought, they give a few examples of the use of this handy library - a script to look up the meaning of a word, how to access password protected pages, getting the information about a file from a remote server, posting to a remote script, and FTPing a file to a remote server. This flexible library allows all of these without making things overly complex and unmanageable.

You can check out the full list of features for the extension on this page of the PHP manual.
