PHP North West Video - "How to Stand on the Shoulders of Giants"
November 29, 2011 @ 14:55:50

The PHP North West conference has posted a video from this year's event - the keynote from Ian Barber of his "How to Stand on the Shoulders of Giants" session.

As software engineers, we all have the potential to navigate the history of our industry, tease out the genius from what has come before, and build a platform for our own ideas. By doing so, we can see that little bit further and in turn provide the foundations for others to build on what we have done.

In this session we'll look at how the history of the web itself is rooted in sharing information and how modern giants like Google and Facebook are founded on what came before them, while being driven forwards by the ecosystems they helped build. We'll see how successful open source projects leverage the past, and how by following some simple principles we can make use of the information, projects and people around us to improve ourselves and our careers.

You cab view other videos from the 2010 event on the PHPNW video channel on blip.tv.

PHPNW11 Conference Report - Part II
October 28, 2011 @ 10:15:27

On the Ibuildings techPortal Marco De Bortoli has posted the second part of his summary of this year's PHP North West conference (you can find the first part here). In this part he briefly discusses the tutorial day and the main conference, including the sessions he attended.

This was a very social event from day one, warm and funny with a horde of geeks trying to mix with "normal people" (yes, that can happen if you attend the PHPNW conference, so try not to miss it next year). The best thing about PHP conferences is knowledge-sharing; you won't leave without a hundred different thoughts and ideas of how to do things better. Once again - definitely a good time, both personally and professionally. If you weren't there, you missed out!

The sessions he specifically mentions include the "Security" talk from Arne Blankerts, "Maintainable Applications in PHP Using Components" by Stuart Herbert, "PHP Extensions, why and what?" by Derick Rethans and "Acceptance & Integration Testing Using Behat" from Ben Waine.

PHPNW11 Conference Report
October 20, 2011 @ 10:22:31

Marco Lopes has posted a wrapup of the PHP North West conference that he recently attended in Manchester. In it he talks about the tutorial sessions he attended the first day as well as the other shorter sessions later in the conference. His is the first summary of several Ibuildings employees that made it to the event.

He covers the content presented by Arne Blankerts (of ThePHP.cc) about general applications security. His session covered security on various levels, not just in the PHP code - hardware, XSS, session hijacking, captchas, database issues and clickjacking. Marco's afternoon was spent at Lorna Mitchell's web services tutorial. Sessions attended on Day 1 included the keynote from Ian Barber, Sebastian Marek and Rowan Merewood.

PHPNW11 Blind Bird Tickets Closing Soon
June 14, 2011 @ 10:12:50

Philip Norton reminds you that the "Blind Bird" pricing for tickets to this year's PHP North West conference is almost coming to a close - the speaker list will be announced soon!

According to the PHPNW11 blog they had a 50% increase in paper submissions from PHPNW10, which means there will be an excellent range of talks on offer, but also a lot of papers to review before deciding on the schedule. So if you want to get in the bargain price of £75 for a fantastic two day conference then you had better get your tickets as soon as you can. After this week the early bird tickets will be released and the price will increase.

You can pick up both the Blind Bird and Tutorial day tickets right now from the ticket page of the PHPNW11 site.

ZF2 Training at PHPNW 2011!
June 10, 2011 @ 09:51:46

As Rob Allen points out, the PHP North West conference is happening again this year and includes a Zend Framework 2 tutorial day session as taught by him.

The fabulous PHPNW conference is back again this year on October 8th and 9th and tickets are now for sale for a mere £72. Buy now! as you only have a few days left at that price. There's no need to wait for the schedule as we know from the past 3 years, that it's going to be a great selection of relevant topics. More importantly, this year there's a tutorial day on Friday 7th October which is also very cost-effective at £330 for the tutorial day and the conference.

He mentions some of the other tutorials happening the same day including a look at Drupal performance and tools, web services and maintainable application development through components. If you're interested in the sessions and what they're about, check out the tutorial day page on the PHPNW website.

Lorna Mitchell's Blog:
PHP North West 2011
June 07, 2011 @ 09:45:18

Lorna Mitchell has a new post today about this year's PHP North West conference happening October 7th through 9th in Manchester, UK. She talks some about the current status of the event and how it'll be structured.

e might still be in the thick of the summer conference season, but there's an event coming up this autumn which has me very excited: PHP North West 2011. This is a regional PHP conference based in Manchester, UK, and I've been involved with it since it began (I'm surprised to find this is our fourth edition, it still feels like a shiny new adventure!). This year the dates are 8th and 9th of October and with an added tutorial day on the Friday, it is bigger (and of course better) than ever.

She points out the current Call for Papers that are open for submission and notes that the deadline is very soon - June 12th. She mentions the Tutorial Day with topics covering Zend Framework 2, security, Drupal performance and her web services tutorial. You can currently pick up tickets for the "blind bird" price of £72. For more information, see the main conference site.

In a new post to his blog today Philip Norton has made his announcement about this year's PHP North West Conference 2011 happening October 7th through 9th in Manchester, UK.

I have attended the last 3 PHPNW conferences and they have all been of a very high standard in virtually every way. [...] The conference will be split over two days on the 8th and 9th of October with 3 full tracks on the Saturday and 2 tracks on the Sunday. There will also be lots of coffee breaks and there is usually a free bar in the evening of the Saturday.

Tickets aren't on sale yet for the event, but it shouldn't be too long before the Early Bird pricing is announced. Potential sponsors can find more information here and you can keep up with the latest by following @phpnw11 on Twitter.
