7PHP.com:
Interview with Matthew Weier O'Phinney (Principal Engineer at Zend Technologies)
Jul 02, 2018 @ 14:04:02

On the 7PHP.com site Khayrattee Wasseem has posted an interview he recently had with a member of the PHP community and lead on the Zend Framework/Zend Expressive projects: Matthew Weier O'Phinney.

This is the #39th set of PHP Interview to help aspiring PHP developers & PHP fans alike to get inspired by listening from those PHP guys who are already highly involved into the PHP Ocean and being ‘there’ taming the waves, surfing better than ever to make themselves an awesome PHP Expert both in their own eyes (for self-accomplishment) and for the PHP Community.

On the other side, this is an opportunity for new PHPers to get to know their “PHP Elders“. I hope you will derive as much fun to read my interviews as I’m having by interviewing those #PHPantastic guys.

He starts in with a brief introduction of Matthew before getting into the Q&A. Matthew answers questions about:

  • his own background
  • the "components" that make up Zend Framework
  • their PHP 7.2 compatibility goals
  • the volunteers that work with Zend on maintaining the framework
  • the release process for the framework
  • monolithic frameworks
  • Zend Expressive v3

You can check out all of Matthew's answers to these and more questions in the full post.

Matthew Weier O'Phinney:
On 10 Years at Zend
Sep 21, 2015 @ 22:53:36

Matthew Weier O'Phinney has spent the last ten years of his career working for Zend as a part of their Zend Framework team. In this post to his site he looks back over the years, how it all started and where he is today.

10 years ago, as I write this, I was on a plane from Burlington, VT, to San Jose, CA, where I'd be starting work at Zend Technologies the next day as a PHP Developer.

He talks about where he started out at Zend (the eBiz team) and the kind of work he was given. It was early on that he started working with an internal, new project at the time: Zend Framework. He looks at some of his early contributions to the project and his "trial by fire" when he was asked to help give a tutorial about it at that year's ZendCon. He also mentions some of the people he's worked with along the way and gives thanks to the founding Zend team. Zend Framework was one of the first major frameworks out there and paved the way for the framework-driven environment we find ourselves in now. With Zend Framework v2 it encouraged a component-based system that spread quickly across the entire PHP community. Thank you Matthew for all of your hard work over the years, not just in the Zend Framework ecosystem but in the PHP community as a whole.

Voices of the ElePHPant:
Interview with Matthew Weier O'Phinney
Jun 16, 2015 @ 14:11:21

The Voices of the ElePHPant podcast has posted their latest episode interviewing a member of the PHP community. This time host Cal Evans talks with Matthew Weier O'Phinney of the Zend Framework team.

In this new episode Cal and Matthew talk about a conversation they were involved in about Conduit, a "middleware for PHP" project. It came from some of his testing with Node.js and wondering why PHP didn't have something similar. This lead to the PSR-7 proposal from the PHP-FIG group with a standardized HTTP request and response structure. They also talk about how these concepts are being integrated into frameworks like Zend Framework and how it's helping improve performance. They also talk about how this move will effect major projects like WordPress or Drupal. They wrap things up talking about Zend Framework v3 and the work that's currently being done to split up the components and lock down the framework as a "meta-package" with specific versions of the components.

You can listen to this latest episode either through the in-page audio player or by downloading the mp3 for listening at your leisure. If you enjoy the show, be sure to subscribe to their feed to get this and future episodes as they're released.

Zend Developer Zone:
Review: Day Camp 4 Developers Performant PHP - PSR-7 Video
May 01, 2015 @ 14:21:36

The Zend Developer Zone site has posted a review of a recent Day Camp 4 Developers event, specifically the PSR-7 presentation from Matthew Weier O'Phiney (PSR-7 is the proposed standard for HTTP request/response interfaces).

Having a keen interest in PSR-7 myself, I was delighted to see that Matthew Weier O'Phinney (the Supreme Allied Commander of Zend Framework) was going to be speaking on it himself at the latest Day Camp 4 Developers day. [...] PSR-7 deals with specifying interfaces to define HTTP messages (namely request and response messages), and in this talk Matthew introduces the concepts around HTTP messaging, and the PSR-7 implementation that models them. Matthew is the current editor of the proposed PSR-7 standard so this talk was obviously going to be given straight from the horse's mouth.

The author (Gary Hockin) walks you through the content provided in the video including:

  • an overview of the proposal
  • how other languages solve the same problem
  • how PST-7 will solve these same problems

Overall Gary found the talk well-presented and full of good content, especially for those just learning about PSR-7. You can find out more about Day Camp for developers and future events on their site.
