Try Yii Framework for your next large-scale web 2.0 application...
Dec 31, 2008 @ 16:27:53

If you're looking for a framework to try out on your next Web 2.0 application, Knut Urdalen suggests you give Yii a try.

The Yii Framework is built for speed and the goal is to provide the best possible framework for your next large-scale web 2.0 applications. With it's superior performance, Yii still provides an easy-to-use and highly extensible feature set that is richer than most other frameworks.

If you haven't tried it, he points out the "getting started" tutorial offered on the Yii site as well as some of the performance benchmarks (including those for the next release, 1.0.1).

I've been published in Dr. Dobbs!
Dec 11, 2007 @ 14:45:00

Many congrats to Cal Evans on getting an article posted in the latest edition of the Dr. Dobb's magazine.

Wow, I wrote this article back in May/June and it finally got published! "PHP: The Power Behind Web 2.0". This was the very first version of the FNN that I wrote. I used the concept in "Flex and PHP: Party in the Front, Business in the Back".

The article shows how to create a site using PHP on the backend along with Javascript on the front end to build a "Flickr News Network" by combining it with information from a feed.

Zend Core for IBM and Web 2.0 Starter Toolkit
Aug 23, 2007 @ 17:48:00

As mentioned in this post on the Zend Developer Zone, the Zend/IBM collaboration group have released a Web 2.0 Starter Toolkit:

It offers a great start to reducing the coding yet helps you produce cool applications using Ajax, ATOM feeds and REST Web Services. It is a great on-ramp to get you working with Zend Core and IBM DB2 Express-C and Rich Internet Applications (RIA). This toolkit will also work with Zend Core for IBM, check out the FAQ. This is an excellent use case for DB2 pureXML.

It makes things simple like making ATOM feeds from a data in a pureXML database, making web services as simple as a point and click operation and check out the usage of your database via an Ajaxed interface.

Check out the project's website for more information. Currently, the project requires Windows (either XP or Server 2003).
