php[tek] Announces Mental Health Summit
Feb 13, 2014 @ 18:37:22

As a part of their continuous contributions back to the PHP community, php[architect] (the people behind the php[tek] conference) are hosting a special event one evening during this year's conference. The >Mental Health Summit is a joint effort between them and the work Engine Yard has done in the same area.

We are excited today to announce that, in conjunction with Engine Yard’s Prompt initiative we are going to be hosting a mental health summit at php[tek] 2014. Similar to the Mentorship Summit that we hosted last year, this will be an evening event we will be hosting for conference attendees featuring four speakers taking about 15 minutes each to speak together on a central topic. We will provide dinner just before and during the summit, and an open social time afterwards so that the conversation can continue.

The speakers at the summit are Ed Finkler, Greg Baugues, Ben Marks and Paddy Foran. Each will present some of their own experiences and thoughts around mental health, especially when it comes to development communities.

Mental health concerns are serious issues that affect a large percentage of the population and includes our community. It’s important that we become aware of the issues that are faced, to bring light to the problems that plague so many, and to perhaps even help those near us who are suffering quietly. Whether they realize it yet or not.

php|architect Live! presents The Cloud Summit
Nov 15, 2011 @ 18:56:42

php|architect has officially announced the speaker line up for what they call their "Cloud Summit", a day-long event happening at the end of November about cloud computing - what it is and how you and your PHP applications can take advantage of it.

Tired of hearing about the ever-so... nebulous "Cloud" and what vendors say it will do for humankind? Yeah, us too. So, why won't it just go away? We found some folks who have used the cloud successfully to strike it big and asked them to show us why it made such a big difference to them. We were surprised, and now we're going to share it with you.

The event is virtual, so you can attend no matter where you are. The cost is $50 USD for a single ticket, $24 USD for php|architect subscribers and $100 USD for an "office party". Speakers for the event include Sean Coates (of Gimmie Bar), Kirsten Jones & Jeremy Johnstone and Marcus Whitney. You can find out more information and register for your ticket on the php|architect site.

Microsoft Web Developer Summit wrap-up
Dec 18, 2008 @ 13:51:02

Derick Rethans attended the recent Microsoft Web Developer Summit and has written up some notes and impressions he experienced while there.

About a month ago I visited Microsoft's Web Developers Summit to come and talk with many other people from the PHP Community on how to get closer together and make the PHP experience better on Windows and with other Microsoft products. Although I was quite skeptical about the whole event and was slightly worried about it having only marketing and brainwashing sessions I set off just after php|works to Redmond (or actually Bellevue).

He talks briefly about each day, highlighting some of the presentations (some that talked to the attendees and some that just talked at them) as well as some of the technologies that were introduced and updated.

MS Web Dev Summit 2007
Nov 01, 2007 @ 16:47:00

Sara Golemon has posted a summary of the two days that she spent (with several other PHPers) up in Redmond, Washington at the Microsoft headquarters talking with developers there about their efforts with PHP.

This past week I was invited, along with several other members of the PHP community (Wez Furlong, Gabor Hojtsy, Helgi þormar, Sean Coates, Paul Reinheimer, Ben Ramsey, Elizabeth Smith, Josh Eichorn, and still more besides), to attend a small gathering in the pacific north-west. No, it wasn't a lumberjack version of "Burning Man" involving peyote and naked drumming (you can imagine Paul's disappointment), it was a "Web Development Summit" hosted by the evil empire Microsoft.

She talks about the reception they had the first night, the sessions that had been set up for the attendees to get glimpses of Microsoft's offerings and come of the time the group spent outside of the event (including a few bug fixes along the way).
