Selenium IDE Tutorial - Part 2
Nov 24, 2008 @ 14:47:11

Sameer Borate has part two of his look at using the Selenium IDE in testing PHP applications.

In part 1 of this tutorial you have seen how to write a simple web test using Selenium. In this part we will see how to use the test generated using the IDE with Selenium RC and PHPUnit. In this part we will use Delicious as our test target. I’ve already created a small Selenium test that you can use. You can download the HTML source from here.

This second part walks you through a test on the del.icio.us website and, upon searching for the term "selenium", checks to see that the number of results are greater than 33,000 via a PHPUnit test.

Del.icio.us Switches to Symfony
Oct 03, 2007 @ 14:36:00

In a note that I'm sure the Symfony project is happy to hear, James McGlinn shares the fact that del.icio.us has made the move to use the Symfony framework on their site:

The preview of the new version of hugely popular web 2.0 social bookmarking site del.icio.us has been available (to invited users) for a few weeks now. In the news this morning Yahoo! have confirmed that del.icio.us was rebuilt using the Symfony framework.

The official announcement mentions Yahoo's reasons for the move (including the great documentation and the active community) and their joy at having their framework being put into wide-spread, commercial use.

Zend Framework: First Impressions
Jul 10, 2007 @ 15:14:00

Jonathan Snook has posted some of his first impressions of the Zend Framework to his blog today - and so far, they're pretty good:

Last week, the first production release of the Zend Framework was released. I've taken some time to read through the documentation to understand what each of the components do. And you know what? I think I like it.

He talks about what the framework is, how it compares to the CakePHP framework and his example of making a simple del.icio.us class to pull recent posts from a feed.

Focus Cloud [concept]
Jun 27, 2007 @ 16:12:00

Jonathan Snook points out a new take on working with tags on a site - a focus cloud.

With this fairly broad classification I set about working out exactly what a Focus Cloud should show. To me the name could only suggest one thing. It shows the area which currently is receiving the most Focus! [...] So a Focus Cloud should show not what has been the most popular tags overall, but what is the most popular tags at present. What is your current focus.

The post not only includes the theory behind these focus clouds but also has some PHP code to back it up (using the del.icio.us interface and tags as the foundation of the cloud's contents). The full code for the cloud can be grabbed here.

Zend Developer Zone:
Zend Framework, JSON, and Del.icio.us
Sep 18, 2006 @ 19:02:20

In a new tutorial from jJason Whittenburg today on the Zend Developer Zone, he demonstrates how to use the Zend Framework and a little JSON to get your application talking to Del.icio.us.

Del.icio.us is a social linking site to store web links. Some one afternoon while messing around Zend Framework I had the idea that it might be nice to add my Del.icio.us links to my homepage. This sounds easy enough as Del.icio.us makes available an RSS feed for this purpose. However, there is one problem; Zend_Feed does not seem to be able to parse this particular RSS feed.

The reason is that Del.icio.us makes use of some extended namespaces for its RSS feed. Normally this would not be a problem as we could simply write a new class to extend Zend_Feed to read this file. However, this is a quicker and simpler way. Enter JSON.

Since there's no direct JSON support in the Zend_Feed component, they have to load up the Zend_Json component to help out. He shows how to create both the controller and the view for the setup as well as a database to help cache the data from each request.
