Marco Tabini's Blog: More technology == more humiliation
by Chris Cornutt September 20, 2007 @ 12:04:00
If you weren't able to make it to this year's just passed php|works conference in Atlanta, you missed out on the keynote that Marco Tabini, founder of php|architect gave at the start of the conference. Fortunately, he's posted the video of it on his blog:
What they didn't tell me, however, is that they had arranged for a simple (but, as you will see, very effective) web-based system that allowed members of the audience to submit "captions" to the screen as I was speaking. The results were, of course, hilarious - mostly because they "forgot" to tell me about the idea until a few days after.
Be sure to check out the video of the video for some great one-liners.

Community News: Sara Golemon & Christopher Jones - First Day Summaries of php|works
by Chris Cornutt September 13, 2007 @ 11:11:00
Both Sara Golemon and Christopher Jones are attending this year's php|works conference and have posted their own "first day summaries" of their experiences so far.
From Sara:
Day one's of php|works is over and as usual, I have nothing but good things to say about this php|architect presentation. [...] My tutorial, PHP Extension Writing, was next in the Paris room (after lunch), and it went off a little better than I'd feared and I managed to give out three copies of my book as attendance/participation prizes.
And from Christopher:
The great thing about staying in the conference hotel is that you can roll out of bed at 5:30am body-clock time and still make it to the first session 30 minutes later with time to grab a complimentary pastry. [...] After [Paul Reinheimer's YUI] session I took a few moments to verify my notebook drives the projector - all fine once the projector picked up my screen resolution. [...] Now I'm back in my room, trying to polish up my second talk - the new one - so that I can spend the evenings talking properly with PHP users and developers.
These quotes are just the tip of the iceberg for what the two shared, so be sure to check out their full posts to get their perspective on the conference. Also keep an eye out for more great summaries to be posted here to get other developers' thoughts and happenings during this two-day conference.

Clay Loveless' Blog: Free Beer in Atlanta
by Chris Cornutt September 12, 2007 @ 10:27:00
Going to the php|works conference and in the middle of a job search? Keep an eye out for Clay Loveless then - he and his company, Mashery, are looking for a few good developers and have a tempting offer as an incentive:
The company I had pleasure of co-founding last summer is once again on the prowl for top-notch, Zend Certified PHP developers. We're taking the hunt for these folks to php|works in Atlanta. Whenever possible, Mashery will be luring the quality developers with free beer. That's right: free beer that is free, as in beer.
They're also having a drawing for an 8GB iPod Touch for anyone that can prove they have recently taken the Zend Certification Exam.
Company description:
Mashery is the leading provider of web services and API management solutions enabling software-driven companies to unlock and accelerate their web services channel. With its on-demand, fully hosted solution, Mashery takes away the cumbersome process and plumbing around managing web services. Mashery provides all the ingredients required to get web services up-and-running quickly, easily and successfully while ensuring that they will scale: usage/access management, tracking, metrics, commerce, performance optimization and developer/community tools all come pre-packaged. Mashery enables web services providers to focus their time, resources and capital on building their core software, not on creating web services management infrastructure.
