Cliff Wells' Blog:
Why the light has gone out on LAMP
June 06, 2006 @ 09:22:41

No matter what the state of a language/application/etc is, how much it's supported by the masses, there will always be those out there balancing out the popularity with their own opinions to the contrary. Where some see one of the best things since slides bread, others see things weighted towards the less positive side. For the popular LAMP package, one of those people is Cliff Wells who voices his opinions in this new blog post.

Open source software has fought a long battle to get where it is today, and at least 3/4 of the so-called LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack are under vigorous attack by many, myself included. Why? I can't speak for everyone, or for that matter, anyone but myself, but I'm good at doing that so here goes.

He makes several points about the package, including:

There's a quick comment at the end noting that PHP and MySQL have done a lot to "bring open source into the mainstream", but that they've done their job and we need to move on.

SitePoint PHP Blog:
Tim Bray on PHP
February 21, 2006 @ 06:53:06

Harry Fuecks has posted his brief opinion on the comments that Tim Bray made recently about PHP over on the SitePoint PHP blog.

Tim Bray kicked off a big blog debate on the pros and cons of PHP (see links in his post to everyone who commented). If you've been around PHP for a while, there's basically nothing new here but you might find cause for optimism in how things are being said'"there's far more informed discussion happening than you might have found even two years ago.

Harry also mentions that there's not much more he wants to add other than a comment on the "PHP is too easy" comment Tim made. Be sure to check out the comments on this post for some great opinions.

Professional PHP Blog:
Zend Framework Webcast
December 06, 2005 @ 07:16:35

On the Professional PHP blog today, there's this new post with their own perspective on all of the whole Zend Framework info that's been flying around, including the php|architect webcast.

I guess I missed the Zend PHP Framework webcast on Friday. I was looking forward to it, but I signed up a while ago and forgot about it. By the time I got the reminder email, it was too late. Fortunately, the recording is now available. If you have an interest in ZPF or frameworks in general, you should watch this.

I won't try to summarize the webcast here, but instead offer a few impressions.

He notes that, while being informative, the webcast still didnt answer some of his questions "about the structure of the front controller and form processing", the choice of static methods over dynamic ones, possible "connection management" issues, and package dependencies...
