Will Code for Green (Contest)
May 25, 2009 @ 16:21:30

Microsoft (as a part of MSN) has announced a new competition for developers to use their Live Search API to create applications/mashups to help either help people cope with the current state of the economy or help to protect the environment - Will Code for Green.

The goal of "Will Code for Green" is to create a Web application or mashup that uses the Live Search API in order to a) help people cope with the economy OR b) help people protect the environment. The top prizes for economy or ecology categories are $10,000 each, with 3 overall runners up receiving $3,000. The prize money for this contest is larger in hopes of promoting the formation of teams.

More information about the contest and how to enter can be found on its website - submissions will be taken from June 1st through August 12th. Voting starts immediately after and the top five will be posted by August 20th. This blog also has more information.

Mimicking Apple's Address Book for the Web
December 02, 2008 @ 11:16:19

The NETTUTS blog has this new tutorial posted (including a screencast) showing how to make a web application similar to the Address Book on Apple's OS X operating system.

As we all know, WordPress is so extensive that you can use it for nearly anything. There are even articles on sites with crazy titles such as 101 alternative uses for WordPress. So I thought, hey, why not? I bet a lot of people want to create their own Web Apps, and essentially WordPress can do that for you. In this video tutorial, we're going to make an online Address Book.

Building on a WordPress base and including jQuery and a Live Search Plugin, they create the multi-pane look and feel, styled largely with CSS. The end result shows your address groups, the members of that group and the selected member's information in the far right pane.

As always, the complete source can be downloaded.
