FUDforum 2.7.7RC2 Released
April 24, 2007 @ 09:19:00

As Ilia Alshanetsky reports today, the latest release candidate for a project he works on, FUDForum, has been released - version 2.7.7RC2.

The final release candidate of FUDforum 2.7.7RC2 is now available for download. This releases' focus has been primarily bug fixing with a fair number of small issues being resolved. I anticipate this RC will go smoothly and will be followed by a final within 2-3 weeks.

More information on the project and this new release can be found on its website or, if you're the impatient type, you can just download the install script and the upgrade script to get to work. Oh, and here's what changed...

Jacob Santos' Blog:
phpBB is Dead, Long Live FUDForum (or at least SMF)
September 26, 2006 @ 13:28:35

In this new entry on his blog, Jacob Santos is officialy ringing his own sort of death knell for phpBB in the form of recommending a move to FUDForum.

The development of phpBB 3 has been past due for a long time. In my humble and not so educated opinion, it has faded (or if it hasn't already, it will fade) into obscurity. The phpBB 2.x development line has been overtaken by other forum projects, including better security in their package. SMF offers many of the features that will appear in phpBB 3 and also offers phpBB ease of installation and use.

He goes on to talk about the "upcoming release" of phpBB 3 but reminds us of the fact that it might be "another 2 or 3 years" before the update. If they ever get it out, though, (and it lives up to expectations) it'll be great.

Jacob then looks at FUDForum (a project involving Ilia Alshanetsky) and praises it for its integration skills and simplicity. It even includes APIs to help integrate the install of FUDForum with the databases from other popular message boards.

SitePoint PHP Blog:
__halt_compiler() - how nuts?
May 13, 2006 @ 06:26:55

On the SitePoint PHP Blog, Harry Fuecks has a look at the "new(ish) __halt_compiler function" in PHP.

Simon blogmarked PHP's new(ish) __halt_compiler function which, according to the packet: "halts the execution of the compiler. This can be useful to embed data in PHP scripts, like the installation files. Byte position of the data start can be determined by the __COMPILER_HALT_OFFSET__ constant which is defined only if there is a __halt_compiler() presented in the file."

It may or may not be an elegant solution (it's certainly relatively simple) but it does have a very valid use case-to allow PHP applications which install themselves from a single script, all related pieces (other PHP scripts, CSS, HTML, images, etc.) being packed at the end of the script in a binary form.

Herry also mentions some specific examples of cases that could use it, including Ilia's fudforum software, which makes use of it to perform its installation.

FUDforum 2.7.4RC1 Released
January 03, 2006 @ 06:39:32

According to this new post on Ilia Alshanetsky's blog today, the FUDForum developers have released the latest Release Candidate for their software - version 2.7.4RC1.

A little over 2 months have passed since the last stable release, and so we are once again on the release road starting with 2.7.4RC1. This release combines both bug fixes as well as a fair number new features, so there is something for everyone. Given the long delay since the last release by FUDforum standards, the list of changes is quite impressive.

Some of the improvements/bugfixes include:

  • Added subscribed forum filter to message navigator
  • Updated Chinese translation to use UTF-8
  • Added better doctype to header to facilitate faster forum page rendering
  • Implement RSS/XML feed caching mechanism
  • Fixed postgreSQL query error on search indexing
  • Fixed creation of a missing default theme in the upgrade script
  • and much, much more...

You can grab this latest release candidate from their download section and get testing...
