SitePoint Design & Layout Blog:
Expression Web 3 - Your New PHP Tool Kit
Dec 08, 2009 @ 17:46:49

On the SitePoint Design & Layout blog today Raena Jackson Armitage takes a look at the latest version of a tool that's useful to all web developers - Microsoft's Expression Web 3. She mostly looks at the features of the software, but touches briefly on the PHP support near the end.

Expression Web promises an intuitive and helpful web development experience. There’s support for code highlighting and completion for a number of different syntaxes; as well as the usual suspects—HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—you can also enjoy code completion for PHP, ASP.NET, and more. Testing tools include support for live viewing of PHP pages, a neat new way to test in Internet Explorer 6 through 8 (as well as Firefox), and lots of shortcuts for trying out other browsers you’ve installed. And in a really nice touch, you can even import content from a Photoshop document, making it easy to grab image parts from layers in your PSD to include in your pages.

She walks you through the install of the needed tools - Expression Engine and PHP - and the creation of a sample page based on a Photoshop layout. She also points out three very handy features of this latest version, Design View, Code View and Super Preview. The second lets you preview your layout in any number of browsers, even overlaying them to see where the differences are.
