Brian Swan's Blog:
Interview with Eli White, PHP Developer and Intern on the ASP.NET Team
September 10, 2010 @ 09:49:46

New on his blog today Brian Swan has posted an interview with Eli White (no, not that Eli White) a PHP developer and intern on the ASP.NET team there at Microsoft with some of his thoughts on Web Matrix and Razor from the perspective of someone with some PHP knowledge.

I had the good fortune of meeting Eli White, a junior at University of Washington and a PHP developer of 7 years, for the first time at the local Seattle PHP Meet Up a few months ago. [...] I had lunch with Eli last week and we talked about the work he's doing on Web Matrix and Razor. I thought his perspective as a PHP developer on Web Matrix and Razor were worth sharing...

They talk some about Eli's background, including how he got into PHP development, what some of his initial challenges were in getting into the language, and - more on the Microsoft side - how he got involved in the ASP.NET team and the Web Matrix/Razor projects from there.

Code and Release Management (DPC Podcast)
May 25, 2010 @ 10:08:56

On the Ibuildings techPortal today there's the latest episode (and the last) of their Dutch PHP Conference session recordings from the 2009 conference - Eli White's "Code and Release Management" presentation.

Programmers seem to have a fairly good grasp on 'how to write code', but not always what to do with it once it's been written. This talk with delve into details about how to manage your codebase, and how to manage releases (often intertwined). It will cover topics of coding standards and focus heavily on how you choose to use versioning tools to handle your development and release processes. It will have a distinct Subversion(SVN) flavor to the talk, but the concepts will not be specific to SVN.

You can either use the in-page player to listen or you can grab the mp3 directly and listen at your leisure.

Habits of Highly Scalable Web Applications
March 02, 2010 @ 09:13:05

On the Ibuildings techPortal site today they've published the latest episode in their Dutch PHP Conference 2009 podcast series. This time it's Eli White's talk on highly scalable web applications.

A constant pariah on web applications is scaling once you become popular. It's not always an easy task (ok, never). This talk will go into depth on a few of the most common techniques for making your website scalable. So that you can leave with enough knowledge to apply this, if needed. Or just to plan ahead so that your future projects don't preclude taking these steps when needed.

You can listen this new episode in one of two ways - either via the in-page player or by just downloading the mp3 directly and listening to it in your audio player of choice.

Andi Gutmans' Blog:
Zend Developer Zone 3.0(?)
January 21, 2009 @ 13:15:46

According to this new post on i>Andi Gutmans' (of Zend) blog, the vision for the future of Zend Developer Zone (DevZone) has been advanced with the addition of a new team member - Eli White.

DevZone takes an important place alongside Zend Framework and our Eclipse-based tooling as an equal partner in collaboration. Open source companies' tail wind is the community'"and the learning and mentoring environment that comes with it. We have always strived to help support the ongoing process of cross pollination among the community which has truly matured the PHP eco-system as a whole. Professional content, leadership, and expertise associated with the very best practices of PHP are the key to what has made PHP a mature Enterprise-ready Web solution.

He talks a bit about the evolution of DevZone from the "Zend.org" concept up to the current day with contributions from smaller, single developers and larger companies alike. Now, with the hiring on of Eli White into the "Editor-in-Chief" role there at Zend, Andi is looking forward to "the next generation" of all things DevZone.

Community News:
Eli White is Zend's New "Community Guy"
January 05, 2009 @ 20:37:15

According to this new post on his blog, Eli White has taken over the post of "community guy" at Zend (a post previously held by Cal Evans).

I've been offered a position at Zend, and accepted it. The official (lengthy) job title is Zend Community Manager/Leader & DevZone Editor-In-Chief. The short form to many people would be: "The job formerly held by Cal Evans" I'm extremely excited about this opportunity to work with Zend and to have the focus of my daily job to be working with the PHP community which I dearly love. I know that any attempt to fill Cal's shoes will be met with failure, so I hope instead to come up with my own twist on the position and to give it my best.

He'll be acting as the liason between the PHP company and the rest of the community including writing articles, doing some podcasting and all around getting in the middle of whatever's going on in the PHP community. Congrats Eli!

Slashdot.org:
Book Review - PHP 5 in Practice
February 13, 2007 @ 08:32:00

As Eli White points out on his blog today, his (and Jonathan Eisenhamer's) book "PHP 5 in Practice" has been reviewed on Slashdot.

The book was authored by Elliott White III and Jonathan D. Eisenhamer, and put out in July 2006 by Sams Publishing (an imprint of Pearson Education). Given today's standards of hefty technical books, this particular one is relatively light, weighing in at 456 pages, which are organized into an introduction, numerous chapters, and three appendices.

The review goes on to detail some of the contents of the book and some of the different perspectives it gives to using the language itself. The book does its best to cover a wide range of topics, but mainly broken up into two parts - PHP internals and applications. Be sure and check out the full review for an even more in depth look at the rest of the book and their thoughts on the validity and usefulness of the book.

Zend Developer Zone:
Book Review PHP 5 In Practice
November 20, 2006 @ 13:11:40

Cal Evans of the Zend Developer Zone has posted a new book review for one of Sams Publishing's latest PHP-related offerings, "PHP 5 In Practice" by Elliott "Eli" White III (Senior Programmer over at digg.com.

First let me say, if you are new to PHP or programming in general, skip this book. This is not a how to or even a cookbook for simple concepts. To get the most from this book you need to have a firm grounding in programming.

He sets the tone for the rest of the interview right there, noting that most of the book is made up of little examples, helpful bits to fill a need rather than teaching you the basics (or more advanced features) of PHP as a language. Cal spotlights this kind of content by talking about the "binary tree implementation" section. Check out the rest of the review for the full story.
