Chris Shiflett's Blog:
Gosling Didn't Get The Memo
March 14, 2006 @ 06:52:36

Chris Shiflett has posted some of his thoughts on the comments made by James Gosling, specifically concernng why languagees like PHP/Perl/Ruby aren't "a threat".

I just read a smart critique of James Gosling's recent interview. It's worth a read.

For those who don't have the time or inclination to read the interview, it's basically the creator of Java trying to explain why PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby do not pose a serious threat. One of his first statements is, "PHP and Ruby are perfectly fine systems, but they are scripting languages." In the critique I just mentioned, Ryan Tomayko dismantles this argument with a style reminiscent of The Daily Show.

The quote makes light of the fact that Gosling is just spitting back the standard "why scripting languages are bad" mentality that's been happening forever and not really his own creative thoughts on the matter. The response that's given (from Ryan) is, according to Chris, both "entertaining and informative".
