Book Review: Silverstripe - The Complete Guide to CMS Development
Mar 24, 2010 @ 14:41:44

On the Ibuildings techPortal today there's a new review of a book focused on the SilverStripe content management system. In this review Hilary Boyce takes a comprehensive look at the book and its contents, getting into a bit of the specifics here and there.

The book has been produced through the collaboration between a developer of the product, Ingo Schommer who works for SilverStripe Ltd, and an experienced user, Steven Broshart who works for German online marketing agency Cyberpromote GmbH. It is a combination that works well. The book is convincingly authoritative but also down to earth; it is a practical guide from people who know what they are talking about and can explain it clearly citing realistic examples.

The book, first published in German and translated, covers everything you'll need to get started with this powerful CMS/framework. She talks about some of the content that stood out to her - the three chapters dealing with making an actual application based on SilverStripe. You can see more about the contents in this list on Wiley's site.

PHP on Windows: The WinCache 1.0 Benchmark
Nov 20, 2009 @ 15:09:38

Following the release of the 1.0 stable version of Microsoft's WinCache accelerator, Ivo Jansch took the opportunity to run some benchmarks to see the response times of two applications, WordPress and SilverStripe, on a standard Windows hosting setup.

While it’s important to realise that benchmarks have their drawbacks, they are very useful to make relative comparisons, and that is exactly what we will be doing in this article. The benchmarks were carried out by Mark van der Velden, one of our PHP on Windows platform specialists. I’m going to describe his setup in a minute, but for those unfamiliar with the concept of acceleration, I’d like to point to this Wikipedia article which is a good primer on how PHP accelerators work and why you should use one.

They used two servers with the same hardware specs and a the following software: WordPress & SilverStripe, the Web Platform Installer (Microsoft) and Zend Server. Check out the rest of the post for the results of their testing.

Sean Coates' Blog:
Why I Won't Recommend SilverStripe
Nov 17, 2009 @ 15:40:13

As a part of his messy breakup with Drupal for his content management system for a local brewing club he's involved with, Sean Coates has been shopping around for new software. He thought he might have found a possibility in SilverStripe, but ended up disappointed.

The site looks pretty good, the demo - while minimal (which is totally fine by me)—seems to work decently. It made my "to test" list. The bottom line: FWIW, SilverStripe made my "do not recommend" list today. A bunch of people replied asking "why?" This is my response to those people. My intent is not to bash SilverStripe, but to explain how it fell short of my wants and needs, quickly.

He looks at two of the major reasons why he'd suggest avoiding SilverStripe - bad code and issues with the installer.

I could probably fix that problem, and none of the other problems on their own are insurmountable, but combined, they leave me with the impression that the code isn't what I'd like to commit to maintaining. The search continues...

First impressions of SilverStripe CMS
Aug 18, 2009 @ 16:57:15

Christopher Kunz has added a new post to his blog talking about some of his experiences with the SilverStripe content management system.

I have recently installed SilverStripe to test if it fits into our shared hosting concept. [...] I’d like to share a couple impressions about the SilverStripe CMS with you.

He looks at the straight-forward installation process, a few wishes he would have liked to see during it and some comments about the admin interface (slow at first, but speeds up once the cache is populated, missing some needed bits of functionality). He suggests SilverStripe for those that don't need much customization - this includes no need for things like plug-and-play modules.
