Zend Weekly Summary:
safe_mode is gone
Mar 02, 2006 @ 12:31:55

As pointed out by Ligaya Turmelle in this blog post today, it seems that safe_mode in PHP is officially "gone".

From this Zend Weekly Summary:

Following the Paris PDM recommendations, and (unusually) with the approval of the entire spectrum of PHP developers and users, Andi went to work on removing safe_mode from CVS HEAD this week. He got as far as the streams code before he hit a problem, and wrote to Sara (for help).

Sara agreed that it was in fact a bug, and admitted that she'd probably introduced this 'slight logic twist' when routing unlink() to use stream wrappers.

Andi thanked Sara for her analysis and asked her to keep an eye on his commits to ensure he didn't apply a wrong fix in the stream wrapper code. She did; he didn't. Andi went on to clean all trace of the safe_mode implementation from the rest of the PHP core and most of the core extensions, ably assisted by Ilia.

One of the longest-lingering, painful issues that PHP has had to deal with in the past has finally been laid to rest. Here's to a positive step forward to PHP6!

Podcast interview with Andi Gutmans
Jan 31, 2006 @ 12:45:16

Professional PHP has thie opinions posted today about the latest show from the Pro-PHP Podcast - the interview with Andi Gutmans.

I enjoyed Friday's pro::PHP podcast interview with Andi Gutmans. With a name like pro::PHP how can I not like it? This was a less formal presentation than the Zend Framework webcast. Perhaps surprisingly informal for Andi, at least at the end. I thought Marcus Whitney did a great job selecting and asking questions. There were some technical difficulties in the live version. I hope those are worked out for the next broadcast, which I am looking forward to.

Now, the question is early February, or late February?

If you're confused about that last question, check out this post for the scoop. (According to a comment made by Andi, though, they're shooting for "mid-February")...

Zend Framework "Preview Release" Mentioned on Podcast
Jan 30, 2006 @ 15:42:46

According to the interview Andi Gutmans just did with Marcus Whitney of the Pro-PHP Podcast, there's some news coming soon from Zend about the Framework.

We are going to roll out much more information in February, and we realize it's a bit scarce on information, to be honest, we just had too much to do on the development side, to start rolling out bits and pieces of information.

So, February we're going to roll out more information, we're going to have the preview version where people can play around with it. [...] There's a lot of work that still has to be done there. We're going to be posting more information and launching a Zend Framework site, where we're going to have CVS, and you can see the source code, you can see the manual, and so on. We are going to publish a roadmap so that people know where we're heading.

For the rest of the interview and more informtion about the Zend Framework, you can check out this interview, and for all of the details on this "preview release" of the Zend Framework, keep an eye here - we'll let you know as soon as we know...

PRO-PHP Interview With Andi
Jan 30, 2006 @ 13:25:06

For those that haven't gotten a chance to check out the Pro-PHP podcast interview with Andi Gutmans, Ben Ramsey has posted a few of his notes on it.

Today, PHP Architect and Pro PHP Podcast held their first live podcast (Interview with Andi Gutmans) since PHP Architect announced their “acquisition” of the podcast. However, due to some technical difficulties, the live feed was canceled after about fifteen minutes into the interview, and the audience was unable to participate in the Q & A session at the end.

Nevertheless, I do have a few notes from the interview to share.

His notes include some of the talk on the Zend PHP Collaboration project (what it really is and how it's different from the frameowork), PHP competing with .NET, and some of the strengths that PHP has to offer...

Andi Gutmans' Blog:
php|architect's Pro PHP Podcast
Jan 30, 2006 @ 13:02:38

On his blog today, Andi Gutmans has his side of things from the Pro-PHP Podcast show that was made the other day with host Marcus Whitney

Today Marcus Whitney hosted me on his Pro PHP Podcast show. I was really impressed by his professionalism and think he had some very good questions. I'd like to apologize to the people who were trying to listen in on the live session which was cancelled after I got cut off twice. There must have been some problem with the "conference" mode of the Podcast. When I redid the interview with Marcus directly, it all worked fine. For those who are interested, you can listen to the interview here.

If you have any further questions or comments, feel free to email me at andi@ you know where...

Many thanks to all for your patience on the reworking of the show. The bugs will get worked out for the next interview with the team behind the Symfony project...
