There's a new post over on PHPEverwhere talking about Sun promoting Linux (and LAMP) over other solutions to the developers it sells its machines to.
Schwartz said that at the edge of the Web, Sun will promote a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution to developers. LAMP, a generic open-source solution, is Sun's Linux-based solution available on its newly released LX50 Intel-based machines running Linux or Solaris. Schwartz referred to Sun's version as Sun LAMP. "Our competition is Windows, but it will increasingly suffer from the economic model Linux will promote," Schwartz said.
And I love the comment made too: The problem with Sun's business is that they want to have their cake and eat it. They want to keep their high margin Solaris servers and sell commodity Linux boxes too. That's only possible if Sun can slow down the pace of innovation of Linux so that it cannot compete with Solaris. Perhaps they should hire Linus and lock him in an ivory tower?
It's funny how people try as hard as they can to make the internet bend to the willl of their company, especially when it comes to Open Source projects like PHP and Apache. They want it to be just for them so badly, that they miss the whole point of it all.
