CVS Wants to Be Your Best Friend (Really)
Jul 31, 2002 @ 12:13:09

One of the things that I know I've run into as a developer and I'm sure many of you have as well, is the following situation: You work all day on something, slaving away getting it to work just right, and upload it finally, thinking things are done and all is well. You go home, sleep, and enjoy life. The next morning when you come in, however, your script has been decimated and all of the chnages you made are gone into never-nerver land. What happened? You question yourself, asking if you really saved it or not. Then, it hits you, Bob down a the end of the hall was working on the same file you were, and, come to find out, he saved his version after you. The changes are gone, and all that work is down the tubes.

Now, I know most of you backup everything (*cough* you do, don't you?) so this isn't a problem, but there's a tool out there that's made just so that these things don't happen. CVS can be your best friend when you're working with multiple people on a project, and SitePoint has a new article that shows you how to get started with it. Harness the Power of CVS for Your Site gets you started from the absolute beginning of things, explaining to you what the benefits of CVS are and goes on to show you how to use it with your site. For those out there that don't use it, trust me, you'll want to. It might be a little extra hassle to check out a script each time you want to work on it, but at least that way, Bob from down the hall can't messwith your copy.
