Well, for those that are wondering what happened to EvilWarlus.com yesterday - they had a server move. That's right, in order to serve the community better, they upgraded from their one older server to two brand spankin' new PIII 1GHz machines with a gig of RAM each. One just runs the Apache instance and the other runs the MySQL server. So, cross your fingers and hope for no more MySQL crashes like they've had in the past (more than anyone I've ever seen). Also, remember - they're having a "contest" for a new site design and layout for EvilWalrus.com, and, if you'd like to submit something, you can either check out their page for submission guidelines or just send an email off to andrew@evilwalrus.com.
Also this morning, there's new piece over on DevArticles.com about using a templating system (PatTemplate) to create the site layout and structure for a large-scale PHP application. This software uses mainly an XML-based language to separate the documents up into sections, and allows you to create pages based on several different template types as well. It's a nice looking system and this tutorial is nice as well, but does the world really need another templating system? I understand their use, but they still seem a bit silly to me, considering most people use them for a 4 or 5 page site that doesn't really do much. I could see using it on a huge site, one that would require extensive maintenance otherwise...but on a personal site, templates just seem silly.
And, as just a side note, I will be taking off next week for a much-needed vacation. I'll try to find some people to help me out around here and keep you all up to date on the happenings in the PHP world - so keep an eye out for some other authors popping up here and there. If you think you have a knack for writing news and have a good grasp of the PHP community and would like to help out in my absence, send me an email or visit the #phpdn room on the IRC server irc.openprojects.net.
