PHP Award, Zend Tutorial, Interview with Flanders
Apr 24, 2002 @ 12:08:21

Well, it was bound to happen at one point or another - they have awards for everything else out there (heck, even those cheesy Daytime Emmys get airtime!) - so why not PHP? Over on PHP-Award.net is wanting to recognize those in the PHP world that have done an outstanding job in either promoting the language or creating a product with PHP (or PHP-related) that has been a major force in the PHP community. There's three main categories: Open Source,Freeware, and Commercial Software and the deadline for submissions is July, 15th 2002. So, get on over and submit your favorite piece of software (or website not-so-subtle hint heh) today! (Thanks to DynamicWebPages.de for the link)

New from Zend this morning is a new tutorial on Creating a "Text Version" Web Page On-the-fly (Part I). This tutorial introduces you to the "printer-friendly" world that so many websites worry about these days, and it shows you how to create a page that almost no printer would choke on. Not only that, but the output for this one is a PDF file (woo!) so it's a bit more fancy than the normal "text-only" page. This first part of the series only gets to the "reading in" and "modifying" parts of the process, with the neat PDF part coming in a later article.

No, it's not the Flanders you're thinking of - trust me. Over on the SitePoint WebMasterBase this morning, they have a new Interview with Vincent Flanders. For those that don't know this name (it's not quite the household name), he's the author of a book/website I'm sure you've seen - Web Pages That Suck. I know I've picked this one up a few times, if nothing else to make sure that my site wasn't in it. The article's pretty well done, and his odd sense of humor makes it a fun read. They talk about everything - his past, artsy site design, and his feelings about the web as a "useability expert".
