Thanks to newbienetwork for the pointer at Zend's latest tutorial - Using Flash 5 with PHP and a MySQL database. They illustrate what I think is one of the better ways to get info into a Flash movie, the loadVariables() function in ActionScript (Flash's scripting language). It lets you just format an output string on a PHP page with URL formatting (like foo=bar&baz=quux) and the loadVariables fuinction picks that up and automatically sets the variables inside the Flash movie for you. Fun huh? Enjoy!
For those that have been keeping up, the newbienetwork has been having more troubles than it desrves. Between loosing his net connection at home and reworking the new site, he's had his share of troubles. Things are looking up though - he even has a new Development Version of his site that's in the process of being completely rewritten. So, hop on over and show your support. All of us webmasters need it every once and a while.
And, for those that are wondering, the Name the Dolphin contest that MySQL.com was running has ended. They got 6357 names that they now have to sift through and decide on. The winner will be announced on the 21st of January (here pretty soon), and we'll let you know as soon as they post.
