Web sites threatened by Samy worm

In the aftermath of the "Samy" worm, security experts fear that the vulnerabilities brought to light through it might cause more problems for other large websites too, according to this new article on Builder.com.au.

The newly-discovered Samy worm is the first to exploit a cross site scripting vulnerability, prompting security experts to fear the technique could be used to open a new front in the war against malware.

Although the worm (Samy) is of no threat to other Web sites, security experts say the worm author is the first to create a self-propagating cross-site scripting (XSS) worm, which is likely to encourage other malware writers to do the same.

They also mention that self-propigating worms such as this can be some of the hardest to control. Unchecked, it can even go so far as to create a DoS attack on your systems - turning them against themselves...
