On Pierre's blog today, there's a quick update from his post to the internals mailing list as well as a response from Rasmus with a summary of the situation.

He mentions a few ways to help make the problem a little bit less, but makes it clear that it's still the right path to follow. He recommends more of a "look at the arguments and judge from there what to do" approach for some of the changes that are breaking the backwards compatibility.
