With the PHP news, Sean Coates has posted his thoughts on the whole move towards PHP6 and how "Suddenly 5.1 Isn't So Exciting".
The best part, though, is the general concensus of change that's attached to the thread.
Up until today, I was really pumped up about the imminent release of PHP 5.1. Then I read this. I'm still excited about 5.1, but it now pales in comparison to the potential that exists in 6.0.
He takes the rest of the post to go over the points that Rasmus made in his email (the wishlist), and talk about each item and its potential effect on the community/code currently out there.
Personally, I think the greatest part about Rasmus' challenge to the community (and core PHP developers) to remove/change the way things are handled is a very, very good thing. There are some things that have been kept around way too long (*cough*register_globals*cough*) for their own good, and now developers/companies have become dependant on them. Would you rather keep liming along on a crutch that has been broken for a while, or would you rather stop, get that leg fixed, and go on your merry way?
