Usability Skills for Every Developer
Jul 08, 2005 @ 11:33:25

Builder.com.au has a new article posted today recommending a a few tips for developers to "get inside the head" of their users and really think about usability.

It's easy to get lost in creating clean, efficient code and forget why you're writing it in the first place. Here's how you avoid falling into the trap of forgetting usability.

Acquiring some basic usability skills will do more than make the usability people like you. The general notion of understanding users and responding accordingly underlies much of the fundamental work of marketing, improving and even selling.

Some of the recommendations they give include: "Understand who you're developing for", "Learn to see the user's point of view", "Learn to listen", "Learn to balance words and numbers", "Assess the relative value of better usability", and, often times the most important, "KISS".
