Marcus Whitney's Blog:
Profits and PHP Programming

On Marcus Whitney's weblog today, he has a new posting concerning Maximizing Profits and PHP Programming.

All the PHP haters are going to have to eat their opinions when people realize that you can program PHP and make money doing it for the following reasons:

  • PHP has a low barrier to entry
  • PHP costs nothing to deploy commercially
  • PHP has all of the documentation needed to learn it efficiently and correctly
  • PHP has a universally recognized certification for professionals
  • PHP has a track record of success in all scales of successful enterprises (even if those enterprises don't like to admit it).

So...I guess that's all that matters. The commercial potential of PHP will always outshine the elitist programmer disdain of the language for it's history of 'novice script kiddies' and lack of 'true object oriented features'.

It's an interesting idea, but I'm not quite sure that I agree. I don't know a lot of people that see PHP as the domain of novice script kiddies. I think that maybe his view is a bit jaded by the scripts and developers that he's worked with in the past - once you get to really know the "soul" of the language, you can really see its power and flexibility instead of the where it might come up short.

Thanks to PHP Magazine for the pointer...
