PHP Magazine has a new posting this morning showing ythat yet another story that vindicates the growing popularity of LAMP-based products to cut down costs and provide effective solutions, Bill Welty, the CIO of California's Air Resources Board (ARB) writes about how the usage of open source products helped reduce their cost estimates from six-hundred to fifty-nine (yes, fifty nine dollahs) and that too, with no ongoing requirement for annual maintenance costs.

In a study from California's Air Resources Board's (ARB's) Open Source Initiatives, they worked with lots of vendors to create the support system that they need. In the end, they supported the Linux with PHP alternative and are happy with the way that their data migrated over there so quickly.

There were some telecommunication issues, but we found user groups on the Internet to be a rich source of information and assistance in resolving them. In the end, while we kept the data base itself in Oracle, we replaced the other components of the emissions inventory application with the Linux, Apache, and PHP suite.
