According to this post from PHP Magazine and this "community index" from Tiobe Software, PHP is rising up through the ranks fourth in the list of favored programming languages.

According to the August 2004 Tiobe programming community index, PHP ratings are at an all time high owing to the release of PHP 5. This index is used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date or to make a strategic decision about which programming language should be adopted. Given this, we can definitely look forward to a robust PHP adoption rate this season.

I can only imagine that (especially with PHP 5 out now) that this report will continue to show more and more progress towards the top of the list, and push PHP further out into the public eye.
