In a bold move by Microsoft early this morning, the entire PHP source code and Zend have been bought up and made closed source from this point on.
From the press release:
REDMOND, Wash., April 1, 2004 - The web application software formerly known as PHP, the PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, has been aquired by Microsoft Corp. in a move to simplify and reduce the web applications marketplace. The best features will be combined with our current .NET technology to create one of the best web application development platforms on the internet. "Our goal here", says Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft, "is to create a better place on the web as a whole. Too many different languages can confuse programmers and web site owners alike. With this aquisition of the PHP software, it brings us one step closer to world domination...er, I mean, a more harmonious environment on the internet."
I suppose it was only a matter of time...
