Making Search Engines Love PHP
Dec 30, 2003 @ 13:52:09

Most PHP coders know how to get the job done and create that "perfect script" that all the world needs to know about. So, you post it out there on a website and wait for the kudos to come rolling in. So, you wait...and wait...and wait...and, well, you get the idea. You need to find a better way to get the search engines to sit up and take notice of you. That's where this new article from Stargeek.com comes in.

So you've just written the coolest new PHP script ever. You're totally excited to go live and see if this puppy really works, and when you do, it works, kinda. Functionally your script is perfect, but nobody sees it since it was never listed in google. My new article is an overview of the major issues encountered when trying to make PHP scripts rank well. It covers PHP execution time, URL cleanliness (with a hack to mask php pages with get vars as static html pages without mod_rewrite), and disabling the dreaded trans_sid.

Several of his tips in this piece are quite valid, but, as always, there are tons of ways to accomplish the same thing. I do like the "faking static HTML pages" idea though. That kind of thing is one reason why this site went to something a bit more "search engine friendly".
