In a return from a hiatus, php traveller has posted a new review of the book Core PHP Programming, 3rd Edition.
Overall, I like the book. It covers a wide range of topics so it will suit absolute beginners and people with some experience. Chapters three and four have a completely different scope. I would hold this against the book in more cases but not here. Chances are that a typical programmer starting with PHP will not go on to purchase literature about design patterns, programming styles and object-oriented programming. With some of this stuff being available right here in the book, one can hope that it will generate at least a modest amount of interest and propell the future-to-be programmer to explore these advanced topics.
He goes on to talk about one major thing that bothers him, the fact that it does not comment on differences between PHP4 and PHP5, nor there is a chapter "What is new in PHP5". Overall, it seems like he's pretty pleased
