A List Apart:
What Makes the Web?
Nov 12, 2003 @ 13:15:06

Though it's not particularly PHP-related, I do definitely think that one of the new postings from A List Apart does deserve a read.

Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in the sales on the web - the ads, the banners, the popups - that we miss the real driving force behind half of the things going on online these days, and this new posting seems to sum it up nicely.

One bright, sunny day, the Bad Internet Fairy closed down every company and organization site on the web. All closed. So all the programmers, designers, and usability engineers went home, shaking their heads. [...] They missed the fact that even though all those company and organization sites had closed down, the internet was still ablaze with activity.

The internet is not, in its purest form, about the ads or the sales, or the "target audience" that corporate America wants you to think it is. Yes, the internet has become quite populated with ecommerce shops and pay services - but turn the coin over and you'll see something marvelous...people writing for the sake of writing, and enjoying talking to each other online without the worries of the corporate world...
