SitePoint:
The Theory of Hypertext Links
Oct 07, 2003 @ 12:31:26

For all of you budding web developers out there (and maybe a few of the veterans out there as well), there's a new article over on SitePoint that should be made one of those "must reads" for everyone learning how to code/write HTML.

In Caffeinate Your Hypertext, the author starts at the beginning - "what is a link?", "what is it for?" and progresses from there. He suggests that you see links in your page not just as gateways to other information, but more as a part of the overall site hierarchy. He suggests that you should always develop the site layout and flow *before* you get started with anything (gee, what a novel concept). He gives the example of a "perfect" hypertext document in the Wiki software - all content is linked according to the content of the page linked to, and not just as a blind link to the front page of a site.

The article goes on to talk about some example sites that show this "purity of links" that he discusses, and concludes with some simple questions/ideas to ask when developing your pages such as "the importance of context", "hiding information", and "catalog hypertext or hypertext experience.
