The Standards Struggle
Jul 17, 2003 @ 12:16:15

There's becomming a larger and larger struggle online between developers of websites out there. There's the group that sticks by their guns and says that a website's not a real website unless it validates by the W3C standards, and there's those that, no matter what it looks like behind the scenes, just want it to work.

This "standards struggle" is being felt all over, from the folks over at php|architect to us here at PHPDeveloper. In fact, I've even seen some places (like on zeldman.com) that praise sites that are completely compliant - as if they're a better site.

Personally, I'm more with the "if it works in as many browsers as it can, it's good" party, but I do try to keep things pretty well standardized around here. What do you think? Do you see the standards as the way of the future? Do you think that, in order for a site to be "properly done" it has to enforce everything the W3C standards say?
