php|architech:
Donations for Software?
Jun 18, 2003 @ 12:22:18

There's an interesting post over on the php|architect weblog that got me thinking a little bit about this site and the possible release of the code for it....just some ideas, mind you, but it might be a nice way to support the site.

In his post How should we encourage donations for software? he states: Rather than "donations", however, I think it's a good idea to establish a "price" and let users deal with it. Sell something that goes above and beyond the software--like support or a commercial license. For some reason, I don't like the idea of donations paying for additions to the software, even when--especially when the additions get worked back into the software itself. Why? Because those changes will take precedence over the others (going back to the "developers must eat, too" discussion above) not because they are necessarily more important or likely to make the software better, but rather because they bring money in the door. That's a dangerous game to play.

What do you all think? Do you think that a "set price" method is a good way to get software out to the public and still provide the support that a project/site might need to keep afloat? It would be nice to be able to even just say that the money I spend each month for hosting is being made back somewhere....
