It seems that everyone's favorite little database that could is taking on some bigger competition these days. The folks at MySQL are looking for bigger fish to fry these days, and are taking on some larger competition.

According to News.com: The Swedish company, which develops open-source database software, is making its way into markets once dominated by proprietary database vendors such as Oracle, IBM, Microsoft and Sybase. During a keynote address Thursday morning, co-founder David Axmark said more than 29,000 people are downloading MySQL each day, and it has more than 4 million users worldwide.

This is great news for anyone out there that's used MySQL or thought about it - it's not just a "small open-source database" anymore. It's growing into its own and being used by major companies to do major things. I just hope they keep it up - it's getting better and better all the time...
