If you're out there wondering why people are still recommending Apache over every other web server on the planet (practically), you might want to take a look at a few benchmarks thrown together by Ian Holsman over on his site.
While these results only pit Apache against itself (Apache 2 versus Apache 1.3.27), it's pretty clear that they're still the fastest, most stable thing out there today. As these result show, though, Apache 1.3.27 still performs very well compared to the 2.0.x versions, with the exception of maybe the 2.0.44 with the filter sapi. Right now, if you're just looking for something stable, quick, and very very flexible - I'd still go with Apache 1.3.x over the 2.0 any day.
