StarGeek:
Layering it On To Find Your Users
Feb 04, 2003 @ 13:36:15

So, you've got a site up and running, and people are actually starting to use it as a good resource, hitting it more and more all the time. So, now all you need is a better way of looking at the fruits of your efforts, other than spending your nights watching your Apache logs scroll by. Well, if you've tried some of the other stats packages out there and just found them lacking that "special something", you might want to take a look at this new article from stargeek for another alternative.

In this new piece, Analyzing Site Usage Statistics with PHP, they break the analysis down into a few layers to get it to work together to show real-time information about the people using your site and hitting your scripts. Most of the popular site usage statistics analyzation software fall flat when attempting to perform some of the more complicated calculations and reporting. Many times we find ourselves wishing we could record and monitor some statistical information, and then not only have it displayed in a useful and meaningfully way, but also in a way that makes sense to us.

While it might not be the prettiest solution out there (well, if you work with GD enough, it could be) - it is a viable alternative to some of the other packages out there. Plus, it gives you a good place to start, and allows you to build up something that might be even more useful and tailored to you and your site's needs...
