In the lastest PHP Weekly Summary from Zend.com, there's quite a bit of a stir going on in the GD and PHP worlds these days: After over a year of inactivity from Boutell on GD, there have been three new versions released in as many days. While it is always nice to give people the benefit of the doubt, it is pretty obvious that Boutell have caught wind of the fact that PHP is forking their library in a serious and committed way, and are now realizing that a large percentage of their users will switch to the new “PHP endorsed” version of GD.
It's an interesting tactic from the folks over at Boutell, but I'm not sure how much it will pay off, since PHP will be packaged with the future distributions anyway.
Also, in this summary, there's talk of a 'naming standard' for the bug reports, and a mention of the sockets issues with OpenSSL - and the fact that it will, more than likely, have to be statically linked to PHP in order for things to work correctly.
