Finding information on a website is close to impossible these days, what with all the dynamic content and constantly changing layouts and links - it makes it pretty much impossible. So, what's a good, easy answer to help users find content on your site? Why, a search engine, of course - and the O'Reilly Network is there this time to help you put the pieces together to make it work.
In Building a Simple Search Engine with PHP, the author steps you through his own foray into making a search engine for his company's intranet. Of course, he gives you all the code he worked up, including the database schema he uses to optimize the search. Instead of using a unix command line tool like grep or find (which would be slower), he opts for the old keyword approach, searching the words already inserted in the database.
This way, of course, has it's drawbacks (such as not always being 100% up to date), but it's not a day way to get things started on your company intranet or the like...
