According to this press release, everyone's favorite database, MySQL, has hit an all time high in sales for this past year. MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that its quarterly sales period ending September 30, 2002, was the most profitable in the company's history.

Most of this is due to the new commercial customers that they've had promoting thier products, people like Novell, BMC Software, and Vocera Communications. They use the database to act as part of the backend system for their "instant voice messaging system". The Vocera Server Software runs on MySQL and provides the system's control and intelligence. The lightweight communications badge is a Wi-Fi client with built-in speakerphone capability to provide voice controlled communications within 802.11b networked buildings or campuses. This could be a really cool thing if it takes off like they hope - and all thanks to MySQL.
