PHP.net:
New Keyboard Shortcuts
Oct 18, 2002 @ 12:29:24

Those constantly busy people over managing the PHP.net website have added some new features to the site for those browsing the site and needing to get to information just a bit more quickly. They've added some keyboard shortcuts that will help you squeeze just a little bit more out of your experience using the site:

  • You can hit Alt+S on Microsoft Windows or Cmd+S on Macintosh now to go right to the search box and type your search keyword.
  • A similar shortcut with the letter "L" is also introduced on the manual pages to access the lookup input field

These shortcuts use the LABEL tags in the HTML spec to make it all work with your browser. This is a pretty cool idea, that I think is underused on websites these days - I've never seen it used before (that I know of), but I can see the usefulness already. It just makes a site feel more like an interface, rather than just a "page", lying there waiting for you to read it. Keyboard shortcuts let you interface with a page more than just through the mouse...
