Interview with the Creator of Eclipse
Oct 08, 2002 @ 12:49:03

Today is just an interview kind of day, apparently - even DevArticles.com is getting into the act. They have an interview this morning with the creator of the Eclipse library for PHP - Vince Oostindie.

The interview talks about what Eclipse is and who Vince is and where he came from. The Eclipse library is more of a generic library than I think a lot of PHPers out there are used to, but it's still very powerful and very well programmed - as is evident by Vince's programming background (15 yrs). The interview is a fun read, with all sorts of promising things being said about the future of the Eclipse libraries.

And here's one thing that a lot of people just don't get that I'm glad was said:

Elan: We all know that you're a big fan of OOP. What would you say to a newbie programmer who doesn't understand what the big fuss is all about?
Vince: Firstly, OOP is not 'The Holy Grail of Programming'. It's just a different way of solving problems, one that happens to suit me very well. Secondly, if you want to learn OOP, read a lot books and write a lot of code. Java and Smalltalk are great languages to begin with. OOP allows a more 'abstract' way of solving problems. To be able to use that, you must learn to think about problems in an abstract way. That takes years. (At least in my case it did...). Many people request articles on OOP. I think that's a bit silly. You can't learn OOP from a few articles. You need books, and lots of them.
