New PHP book - Guide to Programming with Magento upcoming releaes

Michael Kimsal has posted about the release of a new book from php|architect publishing, PHP Architect's Guide to Programming with Magento. Coincidently, one of the authors is also his brother Mark Kimsal.

I'm really excited for him, as I know he put a lot of work over the past several months learning Magento and writing the book. The biggest challenege was dealing with the underlying architecture changes that the Magento team applied in various versions leading up to (and including after!) the 1.0 release.

It's hard to hit a moving target like that, but as Michael mentions, the book and its authors did a great job of it.

The book as been officially released and can be purchased on the php|architect website in either a Print+PDF ($34.99 CAD) or just PDF ($29.99 CAD).

Log memory usage using declare and ticks in PHP

Posted to his blog, Dave Marshall has a tip that uses declare and a trick or two to check out the memory usage of your scripts.

As far as I know, there isn't any memory footprint profiling in Xdebug, I think there was at some point but they removed it because it was a little flaky. I like to monitor the memory usage within my scripts, and I've found this simple snippet can help.

The script defines a log_memory function that pushes the memory and time information into a session value. The register_tick_function method is used to add log_memory to the handler and its called over and over from inside his for loop.

Running PHP cron jobs - regular scheduled tasks in PHP

On the Developer Tutorials blog, Akash Mehta has posted an introduction to working with command-line PHP scripts and cron jobs for site automation.

Scheduled tasks are a fairly common feature in modern web applications. From cleaning out caches every 24 hours to checking subscription periods and even generating reports, more web applications live by the clock than ever before. But how do we schedule the execution of a PHP script on the server side?

He shows the two key things to getting it working - an example of a command-line call to a PHP script (executed through his /usr/bin/php) and an example of a line from a crontab showing how to execute the script at midnight every day.

Stefan Mischook's Blog:
Why build all your pages in PHP?
1 comment :: posted Friday May 16, 2008 @ 07:54:06

On his blog today, Stefan Mischook shares his reasoning for making all of your pages PHP pages, regardless of static content or dynamic.

By making all your web pages PHP pages from the start, you are basically leaving open the possibility of using PHP in your web pages at any time.

By his reasoning, it provides an "out" for you later on should you decide that a page needs to have some dynamic content thrown in there somewhere (without having to change the filename - bad for SEO, supposedly).
