This time they asked the slightly odd question of opinions on the PHP Throwdown event - "The Rules of PHP Throwdown Include".

Seems like the question might have confused some others because the votes were notably lower than in some previous weeks. There was a tie for first place, though - both coming in with 6.8% of the votes were the "You can use PHP4 or PHP 5, MySQL or SQLite, Ajax, HTML, XHTML, and Javascript but no Flash" and "All" options. Dead last with no votes was the "All applications must be licensed with a CC compatible license" option.

They've also posted a new poll for this week asking which of the options you think still ring true when it comes to PHP:

  • PHP administrators like to compile PHP in Summer
  • Register global is not dead
  • memory_limit is not used
  • PHP applications handle 100 Mb files

The question this time asked which, of the options given, were your favorites in the Smyfony project's feature set. There was a clear winner above all of the others - the scaffolding that it makes so simple.

Some of the other options that were included but didn't get nearly as many votes were:

  • Simple templating and helpers
  • Multilingualism and I18N support
  • Object model and MVC separation
  • Ajax support
Following at a distant second was the "Object model and MVC separation" choice (and to others, "Enterprise ready" and "Ajax support" nipping close at its heels).

Be sure to cast your vote in this week's poll that asks your opinion on some of the rules that the PHP Throwdown has set in place. Vote for the one that you think fits best with the spirit of the competition.

The PHP Throwdown gauntlet has been thrown down! We're in the planning stages of the competition, so if you're interested in being involved as a volunteer, drop me a note. We're also looking for some interesting ideas for our sample apps so if you have one of those, then visit the site and leave a comment or drop me a note.

The event will be happening at the beginning of next year (January 27th, 2007) and will be a competition to hack together the best application in twenty-four hours in one of the four (yet to be determined activities).
