Webification has put together a comparison of template engines that the PHP world has to offer. Their list is 17 of the most popular described and compared against one another based on features.

When we think about PHP Template Engine, the most famous library is certainly Smarty. However, we may consider other alternatives to Smarty. In this post we have collected 16 template engines written in PHP that allow you to separate HTML code from PHP code.

Among those on the list are templating engines like:

Smarty

Savant

Dwoo

Lorna Mitchell has posted her wrapup of this year's PHP Barcelona conference that happened just this past weekend.

I spent the last few days in sunny Spain at the PHP Barcelona conference as a speaker. [...] The conference itself was excellent [...] I also saw some great talks from the other speakers there, some were people I often see at conferences, others were familiar names, and yet more were people I'd never heard of but I certainly learned a lot from all these groups.

She notes that, contrary to what she expected, most of the talks were presented in English showing an "interesting cultural shift" in some of the international conferences.

If you missed the conference, you can find out more about the sessions on their site and some pictures on flickr.

Ben Ramsey has posted his own wrapup of the first day of the Zend/PHP Conference & Expo and some of his thoughts on the keynote talk given by Andi, Zeev, et al.

The first day of the Zend/PHP Conference and Expo (the day of tutorials) was great. I sat in on Robert Richards's Advanced XML and Web Services and Marcus's and Sara's Extending PHP tutorials. I multi-tasked as best I could, catching up on some work while finishing my slides and listening to the presentations.

He comments on the talks he's attended (like Robert Richards' XML/Web services talk and the contents of the keynote - including the announcements of the collaborations with Microsoft, IBM, and the new advancements that Zend has made with their products.

Site News: Got a job you want the Community to know about? Let us post it!

Here on PHPDeveloper.org, we're always trying to do whatever we can to help out the PHP community, so to further that effort we're going to start posting a weekly "jobs roundup" of the job information we recieve. There won't be a charge and it can be anything from contract jobs out to permenant positions anywhere in the world (hooray for the internet!).

Now, on to what we need from you - we'd prefer the information to be as concise as possible. Cut and paste of a full listing isn't the way to go here. We'd prefer the summary of the position with a link to more details.

Here's the key info we'd like:

Company Name

Position title

Position location

Summary description of the position

A link to more information on it (on Monster, Hotjobs, your site, etc.)

Other information included along with the request might me truncated or modified slightly to fit within these guidelines.

To submit your job information, send it along to jobs@phpdeveloper.org and we'll get it posted and include the phrase "JOB POSTING" somewhere in the subject line. Since this will start off as a weekly thing, you'll need to wait until Friday to see the information show up.

<quote>

My how time flies when you are having fun! It seems like a little more than a week ago when we last looked at what's new in Framework land; and now, here we are again. Get yer walkin' shoes on and let's head out on another Framework Roundup!

</quote>

discussion on access to model/views in an MVC framework

With all of the flurry going around on the mailing lists for the Zend Framework development, it's easy to see how one could get lost. So, to help make sense of all of it, the Zend Developer Zone presents their second weekly roundup of all things Framework for the last week.

<quote>

Wow, after 2 weeks of steady growth and activity, the mailing list traffic took a pause early this week. It looked like I was going to get a vacation but apparently last night everybody discovered the "Send" button and things kinda got out of hand. C'mon people, help me out here, I get paid by the word on these things. Post often, daddy needs a new Mac!

</quote>

There's mention last week of: an Ajax extension, authorization/access control lists, the Zend_Registry extensions, a Japanese translation of the ZF manual, and the proposal of a Zend_Tree extension, and a large discussion on the integration of web services functionality into the framework.

Florian Anderiasch's Blog: phpeclipse/eclipse+zend/php directory class

The Zend IDE project has met with some different kinds of receptions, but overall, the preview release seems to show promise. The PHPEclipse project has been around a bit longer, but hasn't really caught on. To compare the two, Florian Anderiasch thought he'd take his own look and see how they compared with each other and how they matched up with his expectations.

<quote>

I've felt the need to both test both the Zend IDE and phpeclipse and so I made a little thing for practice and to fiddle around a bit.

Just a very quick and rudimentary roundup, but imho especially an IDE shouldn't get in the programmer's way and do just what it should be - aid development.

</quote>

He mentions being surprised and impressed by PHPEclipse, while left a bit cold by Zend's offering ("I wasn't able to work with a file of just 500 lines because it felt more frozen than sloppy"). His personal choice for larger projects? PHPEclipse.
